2010 – 2014 (WIP)
For me, portrait photography is paradoxical: While you need to find and convey something unique about an individual (a character trait, a mood, a behavior, a context), this specific something also must be universal enough so that others can relate and identify with the image. That makes portrait photography one of the most difficult and rewarding of all photo genres.
As a father, it is inevitable to take a lot of pictures of children and there is nothing wrong with that (on the contrary, it is a source of great joy)! At the same time, I feel that the classic child picture (with a child smiling at the camera, preferably in some cute outfit) is rather bland, not to say somewhat demeaning. In addition to being happy, children are bored, worried, sad, angry and thoughtful and have many interesting things on their minds, also existential questions — and I want to capture that aspect as well.
